MORE THAN DOG TRAINING

The Heeling Canine was built on a simple belief: life is better when you can truly enjoy it with your dog by your side.

For us, training isn't about creating a perfectly obedient dog. It's about building communication, confidence, trust, and a relationship strong enough to take beyond the training field and into everyday life, because your dog shouldn't have to stay home from the adventures that matter.

Whether it's a peaceful neighborhood walk, an afternoon downtown, a weekend camping trip, a hiking trail, or simply a calmer evening at home, we believe training should help you experience more of life together.

That's the heart behind everything we do.

Connection. Adventure. Trust.

WHERE HEELING MEETS HEALING

There's a deeper meaning behind the name The Heeling Canine.

Heel represents training—the communication, guidance, partnership, and skills that allow a dog and their person to move through the world together, but healing represents where this business truly began.

Long before The Heeling Canine became a business, there was a dog. Through some of the hardest seasons of my life, my dog was the constant that remained. He gave me companionship when I needed it, purpose when I struggled to find it, and a reason to keep moving forward. He never needed the right words. He was simply there. Somewhere between training sessions, walks, camping trips, trails, and countless quiet moments together, the dog I thought I was teaching was helping me heal.

Nature became part of that story too. Being outside with my dog was where so much of our connection grew. The mountains, trees, trails, and time away from everything else became places of peace. That's why nature isn't simply an aesthetic you'll see throughout The Heeling Canine.

It's part of who we are.

MEET YOUR DOG TRAINER

I’ve been an animal person for as long as I can remember. Like a lot of animal-obsessed kids, my first career plan was naturally to become a veterinarian—and if there was a dog involved, I was interested. I grew up loving everything from Scooby-Doo to Blue’s Clues, and somewhere along the way, that childhood love for dogs turned into a genuine curiosity about how they think, learn, communicate, and connect with us. Turns out, I didn’t become a vet—but I did find a career that lets me spend an unreasonable amount of time talking about dogs, so I’d say little me would be pretty happy.

My love for dog training began with my own dog and grew into a fascination with understanding why dogs do what they do, how they learn, and how we can communicate with them more clearly. Over time, the dogs who have shaped me, my faith, and the support of the person beside me gave me the courage to turn that passion into something more—and helped me understand exactly what I wanted The Heeling Canine to become. What started as a personal journey with my own dog ultimately grew into years of learning, hands-on experience, and opportunities to work with dogs in many different roles.

Over the years, I have gained experience with everything from companion dog training and obedience, to service dogs, working dogs, and professional detection work. Each experience has given me the opportunity to work with dogs of different breeds, temperaments, drives, and purposes—and has helped shape the way I approach training today.

My professional experience includes working alongside some of the nations top obedience trainers, completing a service dog training apprenticeship with Canine Companions for Independence, becoming an AKC Canine Good Citizen Approved Evaluator, earning multiple certifications through the North American Police Work Dog Association (NAPWDA) and the Transportation Security Administration, and working alongside local law enforcement K9 teams. I've also had the unique experience of developing and handling my own explosives detection dog, Ivy—from her early training foundations through certification and professional detection work.

Working with dogs at this level taught me far more than how to teach behaviors. It taught me how important timing, motivation, communication, clarity, adaptability, and the relationship between dog and handler really are. And through all of those experiences, one principle has continued to shape the trainer I am today:

Train the dog in front of you. No two dogs are exactly alike. They have different genetics, temperaments, histories, motivations, sensitivities, strengths, and challenges. Their families have different lifestyles and goals too. That's why I take a balanced, individualized approach to training rather than trying to fit every dog into the same system.

The dog who started it all

Every business has an origin story. Mine has four paws. Bane is the dog who first sparked my passion for training. What started as wanting to better understand my own dog opened the door to an entire world I couldn't stop learning about, but Bane became much more than the dog who introduced me to training.

Through difficult seasons of my life, he was my constant. We trained together. We road tripped together. We mourned together. We explored together. We spent countless hours outside, walking trails, camping, learning, and simply existing beside one another. He gave me purpose, challenged me to grow, and showed me just how powerful the relationship between a person and their dog can become. Bane taught me about patience, communication, partnership, and trust. But perhaps his greatest lesson had nothing to do with dog training at all.

Sometimes the dog you're trying so hard to teach is quietly teaching—and healing—you too.

Bane is the heart behind thehealing in The Heeling Canine.

The dog who brought me back

By then, dog training wasn't new to me. But life had taken me in a different direction for a while, and I had stepped away from something that had once been such a large part of my life. Then came Ivy. She is incredibly special to me because I trained her entirely myself—from her puppy foundations through certification as a working K9 Explosive Detection team.

Watching a dog I had developed myself, learn to use her natural abilities for specialized work was incredibly rewarding. She reminded me how much I loved watching a dog understand something for the first time. How satisfying it is to build a skill one small piece at a time. How fascinating it is to discover what motivates the individual dog in front of you. And how powerful the partnership between a dog and handler can become when communication finally clicks.

Bane introduced me to this world.

Ivy reminded me that I still belonged in it.

Together, they represent so much of what The Heeling Canine has become

WHAT WE BELIEVE

  • RELATIONSHIP FIRST

Training should strengthen the relationship between you and your dog—not replace it.

  • CLEAR COMMUNICATION

Dogs thrive when expectations make sense. We teach both ends of the leash how to communicate more clearly.

  • TRAIN THE DOG IN FRONT OF YOU

Every dog is an individual, and their training should reflect their temperament, needs, motivations, and family.

  • TRAIN FOR REAL LIFE

Skills aren't meant to stay inside a training session. They're meant for sidewalks, parks, downtown, trails, vacations, and everyday life.

  • FULFILLMENT MATTERS

Exercise, enrichment, play, rest, exploration, and appropriate outlets are just as important to a dog's life as obedience.

  • TRAINING IS A LIFESTYLE

Training doesn't end when your program does. It becomes part of the way you and your dog communicate and experience life together.

Training for the Life You’ll Live Together

The Heeling Canine is about more than teaching commands—it’s about giving you and your dog the communication, confidence, and skills to experience more of life together. Whether your goal is a peaceful walk through the neighborhood, joining us for your first adventure, or simply enjoying a calmer life at home, we’ll meet you where you are and help you build toward where you want to go.

Because training isn’t the destination—it’s what makes everything that comes after possible.

Connection. Adventure. Trust.

Rooted in Our Community

The Heeling Canine is proudly rooted in Brentwood and the communities that surround it. We believe in supporting local businesses, showing up for our community, and creating opportunities that bring dogs and their people together beyond their initial training program.

For us, graduating from a program shouldn't mean the end of your relationship with The Heeling Canine. Through continued group training, Adventure Pack outings, seasonal events, workshops, pack walks, and other community experiences, our clients will have opportunities to keep practicing, learning, exploring, and connecting long after their first program ends.

We also love finding ways to incorporate the community around us—from training in the places our clients actually visit to partnering with and supporting other local businesses whenever we can. Brentwood isn't simply where we're located; it's the community we're building The Heeling Canine for.

Our goal is to create more than a place to train your dog. We want to build a community where dogs are welcome, owners feel supported, local businesses support one another, and training becomes part of the life you continue living together.

Train local. Explore local. Grow together. 🐾
